The Law in everyday life

Buying a house

Buying a house is one of the largest financial and legal commitments most people ever make, and the process is far less mysterious once you know what each stage involves. Our coverage follows a purchase from working out what you can realistically borrow, through making and accepting an offer, to the conveyancing work that transfers ownership and the day the keys change hands. We also look at what can go wrong along the way, including chains that break down when another buyer or seller pulls out, and what your options are when that happens. Because property law is not identical across the United Kingdom, each article states the nations it applies to. Everything here is general information written for buyers rather than for lawyers, and it is not a substitute for advice on your own purchase.
